A childhood disease saw Jos Coufreur unable to do sports, so his parents encouraged him to take up art.  Jos credits them as having played a major role in influencing his art and subsequent career, only passing the baton of influence to his wife Hilly, also an artist, once they married.

Throughout his teenage years and twenties Jos described art as his hobby, until one day he decided to take the plunge from hobby to career.    As for many professional artists...

It was a pleasure to make contact with North Beach painter Maryann Devereux, a supporter and exhibitor with Army Art.  Maryann's work is full of the textures and colours of the Australian landscape, in particular the beach and ocean that she finds endlessly inspiring.   Maryann, who has always loved to draw, has a professional background in technical drawing and drafting.  Moved to express herself more freely Maryann formalised her visual art training through...

From rifle sketches on deployment, to sketchbook doodles on planes, Ben Pronk is finding his artistic feet, and a sense of meditative calm in the process of realistic drawing.  Working predominantly in portraiture there is an intensity and often an intimacy in Ben's work which is visually compelling.  Combined with a sense of fun as he plays with medium, colour and symbol, you sense the release he gets from his creative process, as well as his enthusiasm for making art.  A trip through Ben's portfolio...

The most striking element of Ian Young's style is his sensual engagement with organic form.  Traversing materials from clay and wax, to wood, bronze and photography, Ian is a versatile artist working skilfully across multiple mediums and techniques.   Producing pieces that have strength and boldness in their gentle curves.  Ian's affinity with natural forms, and his practiced ability to capture the essence of a subject, belies the complexity of knowledge and depth of skill he has with his tools and ma...

There is something enormously gratifying about volunteering which leaves us feeling as though we get more out of it than we give.   Volunteering has been shown to be fantastic for both our mental and physical health, and we feel it.  We feel the benefits of being physically active along with that uplifting sense of social connection and belonging, and now researchers are measuring it!

I have been volunteering for most of my life. I grew up in the country where volunteering and helping others out was part of our life.  I see volunteering as giving back and helping others either at a personal level or to the community.   My husband and I help out our elderly neighbours mowing their lawns, weeding and assisting in whatever way we can. Volunteering gets you involved and communicating with other folk, keeps you busy and is self rewarding.    I am and have mainly been volunteering for a non prof...

Comet Bay College have commenced a project that honours WA's veterans - Portrait of a Veteran.  The aim of the project is to challenge people's perceptions of "what is a veteran?".  The stereotype is an elderly man who was once in the army many years ago... and although that still represents a portion of the veteran community, there is a wide range of people who have served - male and female, old and young, Army, Navy and Airforce and from different cultural backgrounds.  Portrait of Veteran aims to show that...
