Artist Statement
To be a printmaker is to accept frequent artistic and technical challenges. Printmaking can be a lengthy process, with more that its share of pitfalls; part of the attraction for me lies in avoiding these, or resolving them artistically. My art practice focuses on linocuts but I do like to employ other printmaking methods depending on the characteristics of the subject, the demands of the project, and the results I’m seeking. The subjects of my works are often those objects, structures, scenes, views or people that may not be considered conventionally beautiful. I’m drawn to patterns and detailing, either man made or naturally occurring, and to finding ways of representing these in the medium of print. I’m excited by colour, yet on occasion prefer to work tonally. Whilst the element that initially drew me to printmaking was aesthetic, I discovered the process itself can be quite satisfying. And the promise of control over the end product is enticing, if somewhat illusory.
