Artist Statement

Suzanne is a Western Australian artist who works primarily in oils. Her paintings reflect her love of portraiture, figurative art and still life. Inspired by traditional techniques, she layers paint over a toned ground surface, slowly building up transparent layers to create depth and form. Although Suzanne was drawn to painting and creativity as a child, she explored many different paths before returning to painting later in life. She now works from her home studio in East Fremantle. Over the years, Suzanne has trained with many well renowned artists and mentors, appreciating the wealth of information and generosity they have shared. Her portraiture style brings an intimacy to her subjects, capturing the essence of the sitter while maintaining her unique artistic voice. Suzanne’s work is considered contemporary ‘painterly’ realism, with a focus on light and form. Balancing portraiture and still life, she seeks to capture moments in time, depict the joys and challenges of life, and reveal the beauty in everyday things. Among other exhibitions and awards Suzanne has taken part in, she has been fortunate to have been selected as a semi-finalist in the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2021, finalist in the Kennedy Art Prize 2022, finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize 2022 and was recently selected as a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award 2023.
