Artist Statement

Howard's work exhibits various aspects of realism, stylization and abstraction but at all times reflects the use of form be it through drawing, studies of the human figure or design application. Observation and reflection provide the key elements in his artistic endeavour be they found in sketches from life, abstract clay forms or the depiction of the human figure. The use of colour and vibrant designs are feature elements in his work which generate a spirit of celebration and joy of life. Each figurative form features the use of clay transfers and directly painted colour. The pattern is floated onto the surface before the final colours are added to complete the final figure. The end result is colourful and vibrant. I have had the pleasure of teaching and lecturing in Arts Programs in Secondary Education, Technical Education and with the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University. After 50 years of teaching I now have time to extend and develop my own art practice, working in particular with sculptural forms in clay. My greatest satisfaction comes from challenging myself to produce art pieces I believe are worthy, but which can share with others.
