Artist Statement

Gary Casey, the creative mind behind GC Sculpturez in Perth, Western Australia, is a self-taught, three-dimensional mixed-media sculptor known for emotionally rich and innovative works. His sculptures often explore the relationship between humanity and nature, with a recurring focus on endangered species and the ocean—a reflection of his deep connection to his coastal surroundings. Growing up in Perth during the 1970s, Gary discovered his love for creating in his father’s shed, where he began experimenting with form and materials. His passion deepened during high school through metalwork and woodwork, setting the foundation for a lifelong artistic pursuit. Before fully committing to art, Gary worked in trades, completing an apprenticeship and gaining valuable experience with coppersmiths, boilermakers, and sheet-metal workers. This technical background has become integral to his sculptural practice, enabling him to work confidently across a range of materials and techniques. Over more than 40 years, Gary has continuously refined his craft through practical experience, focused workshops, and self-guided experimentation. His sculptures frequently incorporate recycled materials—such as edger blades from his lawn mowing business—highlighting his commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. His unique ability to repurpose discarded items into powerful visual narratives underscores both his creativity and environmental awareness. Gary's passion for art extends into community involvement. He regularly showcases his work in local exhibitions and has been a member of the Western Australian Society of Arts (WASA) for three years. Through these platforms, he not only displays his evolving artistic voice but also fosters connections within the broader arts community.
