Artist Statement

I make abstract paintings about nature. I interpret and explore the environment with my art. In my artwork, sensory elements of the natural environment are represented through composition, colour, tone, mediums, texture, mark-making and paint. Tantalisingly, with this bag of tricks, it’s now up to me. I’m inspired to discover my own visual language, this process I engage in is a journey of discovery where I travel across the canvas surface to produce paintings that speak a visual truth and expose fissures of discovered life. Mixing colours, glazing, marking the canvas with varying lines that interact with passages of thick, warm paint are reason enough to pull on my paint-covered overalls every morning. I reach for a brush like a hiker/rambler choosing a favoured walking stick before heading out the door on a journey filled with the unknown and untold opportunity. Each painting is part of a bigger story still being written and inexorably moving from one chapter to another like a page-turning edge-of-your-seat dime-book thriller. Always moving forward - delighting in the results and challenges along the way.
