Artist Statement

Painting to me has been about colour and detail, I am attracted to both. I enjoy the challenge of representing what I see but I also want to convey what I feel in that moment too. I have returned to painting with a renewed sense of curiosity. Learning, experimenting and discovering where watercolour can take me is a journey but I love it unpredictably. The techniques allowing light and colour to shape each painting drive me to continue. Born in Bournemouth, UK, Stef Hayward discovered art early, later studying Scientific Illustration and Graphic Design in Southampton. Her creative career spanned illustration, design and teaching before traveling and settling in Australia. Rediscovering watercolour after retirement, Stef joined Watercolour Society of WA in 2020, serving as Vice President for 3 years and still supports its growth, promotion and members.
